Rule of Three Review: Spring 2019 Anime Digest

So far, this season has been all about quality over quantity.

My teammates and I got together to take a look at the new series. Join me as I take a stab at reviewing Sarazanmai after three episodes (hah!), kindly asked Demon Slayer for more Nezuko, and definitely fail to explain Fairy Gone‘s early, messy appeal.

Throwing back the curtains on a bright new season.

Two men stand silhouetted against a wall of windows. Outside, the sky is blue with a splash of clouds, an airplane shooting across the center of the frame.

I didn’t write any premiere reviews for AniFem this season, so I thought it’d be fun to pop in here real quick and offer folks some bite-sized first impressions. It’s a relatively light season, but its standouts sure do shine. So let’s dive right in, shall we?

Rule of Three Review: Winter 2019 Anime Digest

The weather outside may be frightful, but some of these winter anime are pretty darn delightful.

Two chibi figures in traditional Japanese clothing chew, looking uncomfortable. Behind them, a young man and woman smile pleasantly.

While I left the premiere reviews to my capable teammates this season, I did join for the three-episode check-in post. From time-traveling mediums to teen disasters to furocious kittens, it may be a messy season but it sure ain’t a boring one.

Glancing Upstream: Fall 2018 Retrospective Digest

Leave it to the last season of 2018 to keep us on our toes.

The Fall went and dropped a variety of colorful anime into our laps, with plenty of surprises along the way! I recommend a show nobody even knew I was watching, eat delicious crow over Bloom Into You, and find another excuse to shout about puppets.

How’re those fall colors coming in?Two teen girls sit at a table in a coffee shop, looking at a set of papers in one girl's hand.

My October remained buck wild, but I did manage to help out with AniFem’s three-episode fall check-in post. Er, a little bit. Good thing I’ve got some awesome teammates to review all these other shows, eh?

Oh, and on the sequel front, I’m keeping up with Golden Kamuy and Thunderbolt Fantasy. The latter continues to be the best thing ever, and the former continues to be the Golden Kamuy-est thing ever.

Glancing Upstream: Summer 2018 Retrospective Digest

Summer series, happened so fast…

A young woman in a red jacket spreads her arms, smiling, and says "We're in a new world!"

Another quiet season marked by unevenness, but pleasant surprises and problematic faves emerged even so. Click here for the AniFem recommendations for Summer 2018!  And thank your lucky stars for shows with “light” in the name.

‘Round and ’round the seasons go, what we’ll watch, nobody knows…

A group of young men sit around a low table in a messy, Japanese-style living space, drinking and eating. One says "Let's aim for the top together!"

My early October was packed with travel, which lightened my premiere load significantly. You can click here for the full digest on AniFem, which includes links to every review. The handful of reviews I wrote are listed below for ease of access:

  • Boarding School Juliet (Episode 1): Awesome lead, cute couple, potential for a progressive story about smashing sexist systems… and it’s hamstrung by anime bullshit. Le sigh.
  • Hinomaru Sumo (Episode 1): Straightforward shounen about high school sumo wrestlers. Not my bag, but totally fine.
  • Karakuri Circus (Episode 1): I can’t believe they made puppet fights boring. HOW.
  • Radiant (Episode 1): Pretty by-the-book European-style fantasy series, but it looks pretty and  Alma is awesome.

Some of these characters might be trash, but that doesn’t mean their shows are.

A teen girl in pigtails says happily "It doesn't smell!"

I took part in AniFem’s three-episode summer check-in post, so I’ll send you over there for all the discussion points. More shows, more voices, and more recommendations for you dear readers!

And as far as sequels go, I’m also keeping up with Attack on Titan and My Hero Academia. Y’know, me ‘n’ 90% of the anime fans out there. Truly, I am a trailblazer.

Some cool new anime to chill you out on these blazing summer days.

A teen girl in a bikini claps her hands together happily. Above her head, in thought bubbles, are images of her surfing, swimming, and scuba diving.

As is the new tradition, I got together with fellow AniFem staffers Caitlin and Vrai to review all the premieres for Anime Feminist and help readers find their new faves.

Plucking our favorite shows for the season’s bouquet!

An image from Golden Kamuy. Sugimoto and Shiraishi lie on their stomachs, admiring a golden flower poking out of the snow. They are smiling cutely.

While this season was a bit disappointing for me—a lot of shows with potential either never achieved it or actively shot themselves in the foot (‘sup, Amanchu)—I still made friends with a few series, as did the rest of the AniFem staff.

Click here for the AniFem recommendations for Spring 2018! From ragin’ red pandas to laid-back cafe boiz, there’s a show for just about every mood in this batch.
