Novel Review: Whoever Steals This Book

A review of a book about books starring a book-hater written by a bookworm. Books!

Part fantasy, part mystery, this young adult novel belongs to a subgenre of stories about getting literally “sucked into” a book, with a couple key distinguishing traits. First, instead of the protagonist going into the story, the story consumes reality, changing Yomunaga and its residents into the book’s world and characters. Second, our protagonist Mifuyu Mikura is a reluctant heroine who adamantly hates reading books.

As a bookworm myself, it’s a testament to Fukamidori’s character writing that I wound up loving “book-hater” Mifuyu. She’s written with sympathetic, sometimes humorous realism: a quarrelsome, impulsive, lonely 15-year-old whose words don’t always align with her actions or thoughts. She’s often apologizing for losing her temper or making thoughtless remarks, yet she’s also proactive and reliable under pressure, moving decisively where others hesitate. The contrast makes her an effective hero, pushing the story forward even as she gripes about it.

Manga Reviews: February-March 2025

Look, ma! New side hustle!

Three manga panels from Love and the Highly Sensitive Person. Yoh walks up to Chiyo and says "Sorry, did I keep you wait--whoa!" Chiyo is sitting on a park bench covered in cats with the comically descriptive text "TON O' CATS." Chiyo says "Nope." Yoh asks "What's with all the cats?!" And Chiyo replies "They just showed up." Yoh excitedly asks to take a picture as one of the cats plays with Chiyo's hoodie's drawstrings. Yoh says "Sure."

I’m (hopefully?) easing out of my burnout era and into my ANN reviewer era. Special thanks to the McElroys for this year’s theme, “Twenty-ThunderDrive: Faster Than Fear,” which motivated me to try writing again. Absolutely no thanks to being unemployed for three months, which also motivated me, but in a much less fun way.

Rule of Three Review: Winter 2020 Anime Digest

2020 hits the ground running.

Maple gleefully gets a piggyback ride from Sally as she dashes through a sunny field

The AniFem team got together to check in with a whole parade of new shows, many quite charming and a few, er… not so much. I chimed in as well, mostly to gush about some sweet, chill comedies that are just what the doctor ordered.

2019 finishes out the year by continuing its trend of “quality over quantity.” There were precious few shows we wanted to gush about this time around, but the ones we liked, we really liked. Join us for bookworms, dreamer boys, and tennis lads, won’t you?

Rule of Three Review: Fall 2019 Anime Digest

2019 has been a high-on-quality, low-on-quantity sort of year, but don’t worry: Fall’s extensive array of titles shows is well on its way to making up for lost time.

Juuzo and Mary stand in a doorway. Juuzo is smoking; Mary looks annoyed.

The AniFem gang got together to take a second look at the parade of new fall shows! I joined in the discussion to lay out my affection for the pulpy NO GUNS LIFE, my lukewarm feelings on Special 7, and my wholehearted enthusiasm for Outburst Dreamer Boys.

Glancing Upstream: Summer 2019 Retrospective Digest

It’s a given what I chose to gush about this season.

I got together with the rest of the AniFem staff to highlight our favorites of the season. Like the Spring before it, Summer was a bit light on shows that wowed us, but the ones that shone were pretty darn bright.

Panning the Stream: Fall 2019 Premiere Digest

Maybe it’s called “Fall” ’cause you watch anime until you collapse.

A teen boy holds a magnifying glass up to his eye and says "Your power level's pretty amazing!"

The Fall 2019 season is jam-packed with new series, which means I watched a small mountain of premieres. Some soared, some wobbled, and some fell flat on their faces. And I’m here to tell you all about it… in a paragraph or less.

But hey, don’t worry! If you’d like to hear more in-depth thoughts from my teammates and me, I’ve also linked to the full premiere reviews over at AniFem. Hit the jump for hot takes and hotlinks alike.

Rule of Three Review: Summer 2019 Anime Digest

The dog days of summer have arrived. Good thing we’ve got a parade of anime to keep us entertained indoors.

Two teen girls with their arms raised, flushing and looking frazzled

As per tradition, my AniFem teammates and I got together to take a second look at the summer newcomers. Since I couldn’t talk about Detective Waver and the Wiz Kids, I instead lavished some love on given, blasted off with Astra Lost in Space, and informed Ensemble Stars in no certain terms that it did not make callbacks.

Panning the Stream: Summer 2019 Premiere Digest

It’s a manga adaptation wonderland out here.

Despite spending my last month bouncing from city-to-city and house-to-house like a hyperactive jackalope, I managed to find a little time to watch some summer premieres and chat about them.  Like I did last season, I’ve also linked to the full premiere reviews over at AniFem if you’d like to hear more in-depth thoughts from my teammates.

Here are my first impressions on what I’ve caught so far—let me know if I’m missing out on anything!
