Relationships are hard, y’all.
Friendships, romances, family ties–no two are the same, and they all take different kinds work. I’m not sure there’s ever a time when relationships get easy, but like anything else, experience does help. That’s why high school relationships can be such a muddled minefield, because for many people it’s the first time they’ve had to not only figure out How To Significant Other, but also how to balance different kinds of relationships in a healthy way. And boy, do Naho and Kakeru walk right into that minefield this week.
I’m still really liking the show overall but I have to be honest, this particular episode felt like it dropped the ball a bit. Not entirely because of Ueda’s overly-exaggerated villainess and not necessarily because of the (now grossly overused) The Person I Like Is Seeing Someone Else storyline either, though. Mostly I think it was because that lovely sense of nostalgic melancholy, which attracted me to the show in the first place, seemed to overstep into wallowing territory. This is a drama series, and I expect and even enjoy a certain amount of angst, but certain points in this episode took it too far for my liking.
