Novel Review: Whoever Steals This Book

A review of a book about books starring a book-hater written by a bookworm. Books!

Part fantasy, part mystery, this young adult novel belongs to a subgenre of stories about getting literally “sucked into” a book, with a couple key distinguishing traits. First, instead of the protagonist going into the story, the story consumes reality, changing Yomunaga and its residents into the book’s world and characters. Second, our protagonist Mifuyu Mikura is a reluctant heroine who adamantly hates reading books.

As a bookworm myself, it’s a testament to Fukamidori’s character writing that I wound up loving “book-hater” Mifuyu. She’s written with sympathetic, sometimes humorous realism: a quarrelsome, impulsive, lonely 15-year-old whose words don’t always align with her actions or thoughts. She’s often apologizing for losing her temper or making thoughtless remarks, yet she’s also proactive and reliable under pressure, moving decisively where others hesitate. The contrast makes her an effective hero, pushing the story forward even as she gripes about it.

Manga Reviews: February-March 2025

Look, ma! New side hustle!

Three manga panels from Love and the Highly Sensitive Person. Yoh walks up to Chiyo and says "Sorry, did I keep you wait--whoa!" Chiyo is sitting on a park bench covered in cats with the comically descriptive text "TON O' CATS." Chiyo says "Nope." Yoh asks "What's with all the cats?!" And Chiyo replies "They just showed up." Yoh excitedly asks to take a picture as one of the cats plays with Chiyo's hoodie's drawstrings. Yoh says "Sure."

I’m (hopefully?) easing out of my burnout era and into my ANN reviewer era. Special thanks to the McElroys for this year’s theme, “Twenty-ThunderDrive: Faster Than Fear,” which motivated me to try writing again. Absolutely no thanks to being unemployed for three months, which also motivated me, but in a much less fun way.

AniFem Digest: Con Reports & Corner Reviews

It’s an Otakon Weekend one-two punch!

A girl in a kimono closes one eye and holds out a piece of charcoal, like an artist imagining a snapshot

I attended the Otakon anime convention in Washington, D.C. a couple weekends ago, and then spent the next few days writing about it for AniFem! Three posts in one week! Ain’t I just busy as a bee?

These are AniFem staff articles, meaning we all pitched in a few paragraphs (and then some, because PSHAW, WORD COUNTS) to give our readers plenty of perspectives. I hope you enjoy both my thoughts as well as those of my other awesome teammates!

  • [Review] In This Corner of the World: We had the honor of not only seeing a special screening of the film, but also listening to producer Maruyama and animation director Matsubara talk about it afterwards! I really liked this one, so naturally I spent lots of words discussing its focus on feminine perspectives, “ordinary” strength, and why this story matters now maybe more than ever.

Flip Flappers – Episode 13 (Series Finale & Review)

Girls, be adventurous.

ff13-86

We’ve come to the finish line in predictably bright, bombastic, heart-on-our-sleeves fashion. I’m looking forward to talking about it–but first, as is tradition, let’s start with a spoiler-free review for anyone interested in picking up this fascinating, flawed, heartwarming little series. I’ll let any newcomers know when to click away so they don’t have the finale spoiled for them. As for those of you joining me for our last round of analysis, feel free to scroll on down past those many words and dig on in.

Flip Flappers – Episode 12: “Pure Howling”

In the words of another 2016 heroine: “Let’s make confessions and lose our shit!”

ff12-51

In typically explosive, surreal, and dynamically animated fashion, Flip Flappers delivers a penultimate episode that puts a capstone on our main character arcs and gives us plenty of time next week to tie up the rest of the loose ends. While “Pure Howling” sometimes loses focus as it jerks from scene-to-scene, trying to weave multiple stories together very quickly, it more than makes up for any disjointedness with two beautifully staged and immensely satisfying emotional climaxes. Any week I get to write “MY HEART!” in my notes is a good one in my book.

Flip Flappers – Episode 11: “Pure Storage”

Mother knows best?

ff11-74

For a show that began with so many abstractions and mysteries, Flip Flappers has developed into a remarkably tight narrative, answering questions, fulfilling foreshadowing, and continuing to strengthen its thematic through-lines and character arcs at every step. While I can’t say I’m as emotionally invested in the current arc as I was in previous ones, I don’t think there’s any question now that the storytellers know exactly what they’re doing and where they want to go. Bonus points, too, that this journey comes with an incredible view.

Flip Flappers – Episode 10: “Pure Jitter”

Be careful what you wish for.

ff10-61

Our opposing organizations clash at last, but (as always) most of the real shakeups surround our protagonist. Cocona’s trust is shattered and her world turned upside-down thanks to a series of reveals that threaten not only the relationships she holds most dear, but her very sense of self. Not to mention Mom is being, like, a total control-freak. It’s hard out here for a teen, that’s for sure.

Flip Flappers – Episode 9: “Pure Mute”

The once and future partner?

ff9-28

Cocona’s come a long way since we first met her. From a directionless girl looking to fill any role, even that of a villain (an amorphous child herself, in a sense), Cocona has slowly developed goals, ideals, and deepening relationships. She has a partner, she has a wish, she has resolve. Her most immediate internal conflicts have been tackled, so it makes sense that we’d turn our focus outwards again, to her relationships with others and her understanding of how they view her.

Flip Flappers – Episode 8: “Pure Breaker”

Robots in disguise.

ff8-15

Keeping with its fondness for classic coming-of-age genres (fairy tales, magical girls, yuri school stories, etc.), Flip Flappers goes all-in with giant robots this week. It’s something of a bridge episode in terms of story and character arcs, but the Tron-like city, swooping and smeared action sequences, looming monsters, and multiple mecha transformations easily make it the busiest and most visually exciting episode since “Pure XLR”‘s desert battles.

Flip Flappers – Episode 7: “Pure Component”

A Papika for all seasons.

ff7-31

As last episode’s final scenes suggested, Cocona and Papika’s actions in Pure Illusion are starting to affect the real world, and not necessarily in a good way. Fittingly, this is also the moment when the series itself shifts from a sequence of loosely connected, episodic adventures to a more fluid story, as “Pure Component” is all about dealing with the repercussions of what’s happened before and setting the stage for what’s coming next.
